Decisions are never simple. It's the beauty of life. The same holds true for product selections. What may seem fun for us [interior designers] may be a daunting process for you [the client]. This is where I thrive - you hire us for our creative abilities. As an interior designer, I am fortunate to have access to an amazing pool of resources; products that are different in design - different in price - different in performance - difference in availability - the list is endless. Because we're trained in this field, we also have an abundance of product knowledge which is why the task of product selections is so much fun for us. Here are my suggestions on how you can better manage any overwhelming feelings that may surface:
1. The number one issue is your budget. When we begin budget discussions, please be honest. Nothing is more disheartening then forcing your interior designer to play the guessing game on what may or may not work for you. Truth be told, we already have ideas of what products will work in what space based on our extensive discussion - we just need to know your price point.
2. Be open-minded. When we select products, it's because we're not only suggesting products based on the aesthetics but also its properties, characteristics and nature. We makes selections based on your needs and desires. Trust me, there's something for everyone but everything doesn't work for everyone.
3 - When we ask you to stop shopping - please stop shopping. It's for a good cause. It's makes no sense for us to both engage in the same activity. The amount of research we conduct behind the scenes will be for naught and you will still be invoiced for my time.
I could go on but I'm not going to preach for I think you get the point. I will say this, the interior design process, and more so, product selection process is one of the most fun tasks and should be enjoyed.
The images featured in this post are water jet mosaics from Artsaics. Beautiful, right!?! I selected these tiles because of their strong and commanding appearance - any one of them would make a a beautiful focal point in a kitchen or bathroom design.
